Breaking Barriers Across Borders: A Mother’s Journey in Tech from the UK to the Philippines to Germany

Embarking on a career in the tech industry, my journey was anything but conventional. As a mother of four, my path was intricately woven with the challenges of raising a family across three countries—UK, Philippines, and Germany—while climbing the professional ladder in a field often dominated by men, not all of whom welcomed diversity and inclusion.

Living and working across continents, each with its distinct culture and approach to work-life balance, was both a privilege and a profound challenge. The experience of giving birth in different countries, each with its unique healthcare system and maternity leave policies, was a testament to the resilience required not just to navigate these systems but to thrive within them. These experiences honed my adaptability and gave me a global perspective that became one of my greatest assets in the tech industry.

However, the journey was punctuated with instances of sexism and misogyny that tested my resolve. In environments where women, particularly mothers, were a rarity, my dedication and capabilities were often underestimated. Encounters with male colleagues who doubted my commitment or questioned my balance between work and family life were not uncommon. These moments were disheartening, serving as stark reminders of the barriers that still exist for women in tech.

But these challenges only fueled my determination. I became adept at turning skepticism into an opportunity to demonstrate my worth, leveraging my unique perspective as a mother and an international professional to offer insights that were often overlooked by others. My experiences across different cultures enriched my approach to leadership and marketing, allowing me to craft messages that resonated on a global scale and to lead teams with empathy and inclusiveness.

The balancing act of motherhood and professional growth was a continuous learning experience. It taught me the importance of prioritizing, delegating, and most importantly, embracing imperfection. The support of my family, the flexibility to work remotely, and the occasional need to blend work with family life were crucial in managing the demands of my career and motherhood.

Now, living together in Germany, the journey of integrating our diverse experiences into a cohesive family life has been rewarding. It has allowed us to create a unique family culture that celebrates our international experiences while navigating the complexities of settling in a new country.

Reflecting on my career, the obstacles I faced as a mother in the tech industry, from navigating international moves to challenging gender biases, have been instrumental in shaping my approach as a VP/CMO. These experiences have not only enriched my professional journey but have also imbued me with a passion for fostering an inclusive work environment that values diversity and supports work-life balance. My journey is a testament to the resilience and creativity required to navigate the tech industry as a woman and a mother, highlighting the need for continuous progress toward inclusivity and equality.
